Dementia Residents Create their Own Angels through Mneme Therapy
Earlier this year, our residents who have dementia worked with Mneme therapist, Suzy Volden (http://artwithoutboundaries.net/SV.html), to create beautiful renderings of angels. Mneme therapy (http://artwithoutboundaries.net/e1.html) uses everyday experiences like creating artwork and singing to activate the brain and stimulate neuroplasticity – essential for people with dementia. This technique has been especially successful for people with Alzhiemer’s and other types of dementia as well as people with special needs.
The Gianna Homes residents create their pieces of artwork with coaching from Suzy. She generously squirts paint onto the paper and guides their hand with simple up and down or across motions. Through this, they paint beautiful pieces of art that the residents can share with their families and loved ones. Smiles abound when they work together and see the final project!
